New terminal for Bathpalathang Domestic Airport

By this time 2019, Bathpalathang Domestic Airport in Bumthang will have a proper terminal building. The construction of the structure is underway.

The current single-storey terminal, built in 2011 on a temporary basis, is not big enough to accommodate passengers during the peak tourist season. The airport is the busiest domestic airport in the country.

Once the new terminal comes up, the problem of space crunch would be solved. It is expected to help the airport in improving its overall quality of service. “We will be able to manage the flow of passengers better because at the moment because of limited space, we have to separate incoming passengers and outgoing passengers,” Airport Manager Tashi Lhamo said.

“Also, at the moment, we face a lot of challenge with the turnaround time because the loaders have to load the luggage manually but with the new terminal building, we will have baggage belt facilities, which will reduce the turnaround time significantly.”

The two-storey terminal building will also have an internal heating system. The over Nu 150 m project is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

There are also plans to build an apron at the airport. The apron is the area of an airport where aircraft are parked, unloaded or loaded, refueled, or boarded.
