Road to Phulari Goenpa in Gelegphu in bad shape

The 5.8 kilometre access road to Phulari Goenpa in Sarpang is in a poor shape. The construction of the road began in May last year with a contract period of 12 months.

But the contractor had to be terminated after failing to complete the base course works on time. Sarpang’s Dzongkhag Engineer said the contractor failed to resume the works after heavy monsoon this summer washed away around half a kilometre of the road’s base course.

The people of Dechenpelri village in Samtenling Gewog and Lekithang and Zomlingthang villages of Gelegphu Gewog are the road beneficiaries. They are not happy with the poor condition of the road.

“Taxis refuse to come here and we cannot afford to hire bigger cars due to insufficient load,” said Jambay Sonam from Dechhen Pelri village.

“The road becomes inaccessible during heavy rainfall,” said Namgay from Gelegphu.

Some people think the relevant authorities may have failed to carry out a proper feasibility study for the road. “During monsoon, the road is flooded with water,” said Dorji from Dechhen Pelri.

“I think a proper drainage has to be built to prevent rainwater from flooding the road.”

The government is spending Nu 200 m for the construction of the road. Phulari is located above Dechhen Pelri village, almost seven kilometers away from Gelephu town.
