Blacktopping of Drepoong road almost halfway through

Blacktopping of 21-kilometre long Drepoong Gewog Centre (GC) road is in full swing. GC road blacktopping starts from Gyalpoizhing until the Drepoong Gewog Centre.

Works are carried out package wise and currently, under the first package, 7 of 10-kilometre of motorway has been blacktopped. It started three months ago and expected to be complete by the end of this month.

The blacktopping of remaining 11-kilometre will begin from mid of this month under second package.

Villagers of Drepoong Gewog are delighted to see their integral mode of communication being blacktopped.

“I am happy that blacktopping works are underway. Previously, taxi drivers charge high fares. They charge Nu 700 to 800 per passenger from Gyalpoizhing till Drepoong. However, currently they charge only Nu 500 to 600,” said one of the residents, Rinchen Zam.

Others also said after the GC road is entirely blacktopped, it would be a joy ride for them.

“We were glad when the gewog road was first constructed. But now we are extremely happy to see it is being blacktopped. Once it’s all blacktopped, we can easily reach to our coveted destination and it would be happy experience to travel,” said another villager, Rinchen.

Once complete, the GC road will benefit some 237 households in Drepoong Gewog.

So far, blacktopping of GC roads in four gewogs of Monggar is completed. For the remaining 13 gewogs, works are still underway.

Blacktopping GC roads in gewogs across the country has been a pivotal pledge by the government during its political campaign in 2013.
