Women football team gearing up for SAAF Championship

Women footballers are gearing up for the upcoming South Asia Football Federation Women’s Championship.

Twenty six senior players, selected from 20 dzongkhags, are undergoing training.

Of the 26, 20 will be selected to compete in the championship. It will be held at Kanchanjunga Stadium in Siliguri, India, on December 26.

The players are in Gelegphu undergoing rigorous coaching and acclimatizing.

Bhutan will face Nepal in the opening match.

The team’s coach, Sungae Lee, who is from South Korea said he would want the players to gain experience from the championship.

“I am proud to lead the country’s women football team,” said the team’s captain, Sonam Yangchen.

Bhutan is in Group A along with Nepal, Sri Lanka and The Maldives. Group B has India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Seven teams from seven SAARC countries are participating in the tournament.

The final will be held on January 4.
