Energy revenue increases

Energy revenue increasesRevenue from the sale of energy to India is expected to increase this year compared to last given favourable hydrological factor and good amount of rainfall the country received so far.

In four months, between January and May this year, the Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) made gross revenue of Nu 1.6 B by selling power to India. In the same period last year, it made only Nu 1B. This shows an increase of Nu 600M this year compared to the same period last year.

It made another Nu 902 M through domestic sale of power taking the total gross revenue of DGPC to Nu 2.5 B.

The highest generation was recorded in the month of June at 844 M units. Generation is expected to improve as July approaches. June, July and August are considered peak season during which time generation tips.

From November till March it is considered lean season and Bhutan usually import energy from India to meet domestic requirement during the season.

In the last season between November 2014 to march 2015, Bhutan imported 121 M units energy from India worth Nu 240M. The energy was bought at Nu 1.98 a unit from India.

However, the energy imported from India is adjusted from the energy exported to India.

DGPC officials said all the generating plants today are running in full capacity.
