MPs talk about increasing number of suicide cases

NA- increasing number of suicide casesThe Member of Parliament from Dramedtse-Ngatshang, Ugyen Wangdi, highlighted about the increasing number of suicide cases of students in the National Assembly, yesterday. He questioned the education minister if measures are put in place to prevent such cases in future.

The Education Minister, Mingbo Drukpa, said some 56 councillors are providing counselling on various issues related to youth in schools. Lyonpo said another batch of 87 councillors will be sent to different schools.


The Prime Minister said it is a major concern for the country. Lyonchhen said last year, a committee was formed to take record of suicide cases.

Earlier this year, the government received the report. Going by the report, a total of 361 suicide cases were reported from 2009 till 2013. According to the report majority of the suicide victims were mostly due to drug and alcohol related problems.

Unemployment issues and for not being able to get through exams were among other reasons. Lyonchhen said measures and solutions have been planned to solve the problem.
