ICIMOD’s Day observed in Bhutan

ICIMOD-DayTo strengthen ICIMOD’s engagement and enhance the partnership for implementation of various programmes, Bhutan-ICIMOD day was observed on Friday. Bhutan is one of the founding members of ICIMOD which stands for International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.

Bhutan-ICIMOD’s day is observed to provide a platform for ICIMOD and its partners in Bhutan to discuss on the ongoing programmes in the country. There are six regional programmes. They are adaption to change, trans-boundary landscapes, river basins, cryosphere and atmosphere, mountain environment regional information system and Himalayan university consortium.

The Director General of ICIMOD, David Molden, said ICIMOD has a fruitful 30 years of engagement with Bhutan. He added that in recent years ICIMOD has been putting in more efforts and carrying out more activities in Bhutan.

“Partnership has been wonderful in Bhutan. The only way ICIMOD can work is through partnerships.”


The daylong meeting also saw discussion on the future collaborations.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests is the designated focal agency of the ICIMOD.  The officiating secretary of the ministry, Namgay Wangchuk said that ICIMOD have been the knowledge and technology partner.

ICIMOD have been making significant contributions towards sustainable mountain development and in enhancing the livelihoods of mountain farmers.

ICIMOD is a knowledge, learning and enabling centre developing and sharing information and knowledge using communications to empower the eight regional members of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region.

The member countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan.
