Chillies, the main source of revenue in Kangpar

Chilli-Kangpar--At first glance, the rooftops of houses in Kangpar Gewog under Trashigang, appear like they have been painted red. But on a closer look, you will realise, it is chillies spread on the rooftops to be sun-dried.

Kangpar’s chillies have carved its own market. While some say, its popularity is to do with its district flavour, many say it is the abundant yield and for years, that has added to its fame.

Majority of the 450 households under five chiwogs of Kangpar grow chillies. It is their main cash crop and major income-generator. A kilogram of sun-dried chillies fetches close to Nu. 500.

But the farmers say they prefer selling green chillies even though it fetches just about Nu.30-40 a kilogram.

“…Drying chillies involve lot of work. One major problem is, if it rains, it spoils everything,” said one of the farmer, Karma Thinley.

Another farmer, Lhanga Tshering says, they have to travel all the way to Samdrup Jongkhar to sell dry chillies. “We have to sell it in bulk to the auction yard and it is taxing,” he said.

Chillies here are also known for its taste. So, it is said anyone visiting the place must taste Kangpar chillies. After you have done that, it’s hard to leave without taking some home with you.

About 5,000 people live in Kangpar.
