India’s PM inaugurate new Supreme Court building Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated the new Supreme Court building in Hejo, this evening. The Supreme Court is constructed with the fund of Nu.700 MN from the Government of India.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Justice Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye said the Supreme Court building is not just another edifice or another court. He said it is a symbol of Indo-Bhutan Friendship. Lyonpo explained the significance of the concept and the design of the Supreme Court.

“We stand before yet another grand testimony of the friendship between Bhutan and India, a friendship that is rooted in an illustrious past built by our enlightened forefathers and even today entrenched in our minds of our leaders and people.”


Lyonpo said the grandeur of the Supreme Court Building symbolises the generosity and enduring support of the Government. “The Court’s firm structures will keep alive the flame of friendship and the aspirations of our two nations and people.”

The Chief Justice also added the Indian Government has assisted the Judiciary of Bhutan with construction of eight Dungkhag courts, taking justices nearer to the people.

The foundation stone was laid in October 2005. The construction of the Supreme Court began only towards end of 2008.
