His Majesty graces the opening of the parliament

HM+3rdParliament--Opening His Majesty the King, today, graced the opening of the third session of the second parliament. His Majesty spoke to the members of the Parliament on the need to further strengthen the democratic process in the country, even though, he said the process has been successful so far. His Majesty also announced the celebration of the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo next year.

Upon arrival at the courtyard of the Gylayong Tshokhang, His Majesty the King was received with chipdrel procession by the Zhung Dratshang, the Prime minister, the Opposition Leader, the Chairperson of the National Council, Cabinet Ministers and the Members of the Parliament.

The opening session began with the Zhugdrel Phuensum Tshopai ceremony.

Addressing the parliament, His Majesty spoke on the importance of national goals and the successful democratic system in Bhutan over the last six years.


However, His Majesty reminded the parliamentarians that there is more to be done and urged each one of them to work for the interest of the nation.

His Majesty said Bhutan should strive towards achieving self sufficiency by effectively utilising the country’s limited resources.

The Prime Minister, the Speaker, the National Council Chairperson and the Opposition Leader thanked His Majesty for his unwavering support and selfless leadership in securing peace and security in the country. They also expressed gratitude to His Majesty for his support to the people in times of disasters such as the recent boat accident in Zhemgang.

The leaders also pledged to work harder in the interest of the nation and for the unity of the nation.

Also at the ceremony, His Majesty announced that the country and the people will be celebrating His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo’s 60th Birth Anniversary next year.

In his address, His Majesty the King also commended India for successfully conducting its 16th general elections.

Her Royal Highness, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, other members of the Royal Family and foreign dignitaries were present at the opening session of the Parliament this morning.
