Princess Benedikte of Denmark in Bhutan--JDWNRHPrincess Benedikte visited the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, today. She is accompanied by officials from the World Diabetes Foundation.

Her Royal Highness visited the Diabetes clinic and other departments of the hospital.

A survey carried out by the Health Ministry in 2007 showed 8.2 percent of Bhutan’s urban population to be diabetic. Of that, 70 percent were found to be unaware of their condition.  The survey also revealed 55 percent of the diabetic people have hypertension as well.

“If not detected early, diabetes can be damaging. It causes organ failure, strokes, heart attacks and blindness, treatment of which costs the government heavily,” said the Medical Specialist of JDWNRH, Dr. Tashi Wangdi.

Most diabetics fall in the productive age group, which means a serious setback for the country’s workforce affecting the economy.

Princess Benedikte will be in the country till Friday.
