Controversial lime mining in Khariphu to be re-looked at

Controversial lime mining in Khariphu to be re-looked at-Economic Affairs Minister, Norbu Wangchuk(Update): The controversial Khariphu lime mining case will be re-looked at. The Economic Affairs Minister, Norbu Wangchuk, said another round of investigation will be carried out to determine the case.

The lime mining, which falls under Maedwang Gewog in Thimphu, has cost them their water source; the villagers of Khariphu had alleged. As an act of defiance, 13 out of 46 households have refused to sign a clearance agreement.

The clearance agreement would otherwise extend the lease period and allow Kuenphen Norden Mining Company to continue operating in Khariphu for another five years.

Speaking to the villagers yesterday, Lyonpo Norbu Wangchuk said mines belong to the state and the benefits from the mining operations must have larger benefit to the people of Bhutan.

He said if the immediate community is adversely affected, then this is where the Ministry of Economic Affairs must be concerned. “And perhaps therefore deny awarding licenses to the mine operations.”

Kuenphen Norden Mining Company has been excavating lime for about 10 years in Khariphu.
