500 people undergo free surgical camp

500 people undergo free surgical campMore than 500 people have been treated so far through the free surgical camp organised by Tarayana Foundation. It is being carried out by volunteers from Surgicorps International. Every year for around a week, those with cleft lip, burn injuries, bear attack wounds and other impairments are provided free treatment.

The surgeries, this time, began on Monday and almost 50 patients have undergone surgeries, so far. The Project is mainly focused on those from rural areas who have less access to such treatment and who cannot afford it.

Tarayana Foundation is also providing meals, accommodation and travelling expenses to those coming from far off places.

Volunteers from Surgicorps International have been visiting Bhutan and providing free treatment since 2007. This year, a team of 23 volunteers have flown in from the US and already treated around 45 patients.

One of the Members, Dr Paul Kim says the results have turned out well without any setbacks.

“Patients have been very well taken care of, not only by our team, but by the Bhutanese nurses.” Dr. Kim Paul said the patients haven’t suffered infections and burn victims have regained a lot of function with their hands and feet.

A similar project called operation smile will be organised in Paro in September.
