Bhutan becomes a part of IPU

Bhutan-IPUBhutan became the 163rd member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on October 7, this year. Bhutan’s membership was announced at the opening of the 129th IPU Assembly which is being held in Geneva.

The Assembly began on October 7 and ends on October 9.

The Speaker, Jigme Zangpo, is leading a six member delegation to the IPU Assembly. IPU is the international organization of parliaments and was established in 1889.

“It is a great honour for the Parliament and people of Bhutan to be a member of the Union,” said Tshogpon, Jigme Zangpo.

He also expressed his confidence that Bhutan’s membership to this global democratic forum will go a long way in building strong democratic culture and values in the Bhutanese polity.

The Union is the focal point for worldwide parliamentary dialogue and works towards peace and cooperation among people and towards the firm establishment of representative democracy.

The Tshogpon also called on the President of the IPU, Abdelwahad Radi.

The Assembly which began on Monday ends tomorrow. IPU is the international organization of parliaments, established in 1889.
