Ever since the electrification of Merak Gewog under Trashigang in 2011, the consumption of firewood has been on the decline. The gewog, in the past, would use huge amount of firewood.
People spend a lot of time in fetching and stockpiling firewood every year in Merak, essentially for cooking and most importantly to beat the harsh weather during winter. As firewood was not easily available near their village they had to use animals to transport firewood from faraway places.

These days they use firewood only to beat the cold weather during the winter.
There is, however, an increase in the demand for timber. A lot of new houses are being constructed in the gewog. Demand for timber and firewood from other gewogs, has also increased, especially after the arrival of the farm road.
