Renovation of Daga Dzong nearing completion

daga-dzongRenovation works on the Daga Tashi Yangtse Dzong is expected to complete in June this year.  Except for the Utse or the Golden pinnacle, rest of the work has been completed. The renovation works began in 2009.

The dzong built in 1651 served as the seat of the Daga Penlop and Daga Dzongpon for many years. Later, it housed the Rabdey and the dzongkhag administration.

The practice still continues. Since the dzong is under renovation, the dzongkhag administration had to move out. The monks have been shifted to the new Drasha.

The renovation works were carried out, keeping in mind, the dzong’s original architecture. The dzong will have toilets and water supply. The renovation works are expected to complete on time with the 14 gewogs contributing labour on a rotational basis

“After the government increased the wage, people volunteered to work,”said Namgay Dorji, the Project Engineer. He said the matter was also discussed in the Dzongkhag Tshogdu, where it was decided that people of every gewog will come to work on a rotational basis. Everyday 35 to 50 people come to work on a rotational basis.

Namgay Dorji said construction of the courtyard and walls outside the dzong will be started only after the renovation of the dzong and the Utse are complete.

The project costing 125 million ngultrum is funded by the Indian government.
