Meat Ban during Holy Month

MeatBanStarting today, a nation-wide ban on the sale of meat comes into effect. The sale of meat is banned, every year, in the first Bhutanese month.

The first Bhutanese month called the Choetrul Daw is considered a holy month, and no meat products are sold.

The days leading up to the ban are lucrative for meat shops. People rush to buy meat in huge quantities to stock up for the entire month. The rush is also caused by the Bhutanese New Year, which is celebrated on the first two days of the Choetrul Daw.

The meat shops are known to take advantage of the rush, and hike up their prices.

In spite of the raised prices, the shops run out of meat quickly due to overwhelming demand.
