His Majesty graces the opening of parliament’s 10th session

HM-10th Session of the 1st ParliamentHis Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen graced the opening of the 10th session of the parliament today.

His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen were received in a traditional chipdrel procession at the courtyard of the Gyalyong Tshokhang.

Their Majesties were received by the monks of the Zhung Dratshang, the Speaker, the Opposition Leader, the Chairperson of the National Council, the Cabinet Ministers and the Members of the Parliament.

In the opening address, the Speaker, Jigme Tshultim, reported on the bills that will be discussed during the session. They are the Contract Bill 2012, the Alternate Dispute Resolution Bill 2012, the Road Bill and the domestic violence prevention bill, 2012.

The Speaker also announced that the government will dissolve prior to the completion of their tenure in April. The National Council on the other hand will complete their full tenure.

“…if we continue till April the elections can take place only in July. This will affect the commencement of the next government. Moreover the elections will coincide with the people’s peak season for agricultural works which might hamper the elections,” said Tshogpon Jigme Tshultim.

 The opening session was also graced by their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and the Princesses, senior government officials and the international dignitaries.

Both the houses will begin their formal deliberation from Wednesday.
