School with no plastics

May 25, 2012

Wangdichholing Lower Secondary School in Bumthang is reinforcing the plastic ban in the school compound.  This is being done to mitigate plastic related wastes in the school.

Every morning, the members of the nature club and the police youth partnership programme stand at the entry gate to ensure that students are not carrying plastic bags to the school. The club has also informed the school canteen to avoid selling edible items wrapped in plastics.

“To keep the surrounding of our school clean and plastic free, we do carry out daily checking near the school gate,” said one of the nature club members.

“This is being done to keep our school clean and also our principal says that plastic related wastes will affect our health, so we don’t allow students to bring plastics,” said another.

According to the teachers and students, this initiative has drastically reduced plastic wastes in and around the school campus. The school has over 900 students with 42 teaching staff.

Good initiative. If schools take such good initiatives, they can really make a great differences like this. Hats off to the school authority, both teachers and students.
