24 new HIV cases detected in last six months

Twenty-four new HIV cases have been detected in the last six months from June to November this year in the country. Of the new cases, 15 are male nine are women.

The majority, 58 % of the reported cases are between the ages of 25-49 years and 38% above 50 years and 4% between 20-24 years.

Among the new cases, the highest case detected is among the farmers at 12. Of the new cases, 23 of them acquired the infection through unprotected heterosexual and one from anal sex.

All the new cases are currently being treated at the National Referral Hospital. 60 HIV cases have been detected so far this year.

A news release from the health ministry says that with an average case detection of 55 cases in the last five years, there is still a case detection gap of 45% as of this month. This shows that only 55% of the estimated 1,265 people living with HIV know their HIV status and the remaining 569 are still not aware that they have HIV.
