His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck has been appointed as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The appointment was made at the 133rd Session of the IOC held on the 9th of October in Buenos Aires.

The session, held ahead of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires this month, elected new members to the IOC following a proposal by the IOC Executive Board in July 2018.

Announcing the new memberships, IOC President Thomas Bach said the Olympic Movement would benefit significantly from the expertise of the new members and that their extensive knowledge of the sports movement will add extra strength and experience to the universal college of IOC members.

His Royal Highness is His Majesty’s Representative and the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) and has worked closely with federations and athletes to promote sports in Bhutan.
