OAG records more cases of gold smuggling and offence against women

The Office of the Attorney General received 33 cases of offence against women last year, an increase of eight cases from 2016. This is as per the 2017 OAG Annual Report.

The offence against women includes rape, computer pornography, prostitution and criminal elopement.

Under the offence of prostitution and patronizing prostitution, the office received 14 cases. No such cases were reported in 2016.

Gold smuggling cases also rose significantly in 2017.

The OAG prosecuted 13 gold smuggling cases last year, which is a sharp rise from just three cases in 2016.

The OAG report also noted a change in the modus operandi by the smugglers who now smuggle gold into the country by road. And the increase in the gold smuggling cases is partly being attributed to the change in the modus operandi.

Meanwhile, the number of red sander smuggling cases saw a drop. From eight cases in 2016, the number came down to six last year.
