High Court upholds Lhuentse court’s judgement on tobacco smuggling case

The High Court today upheld the Lhuentse district court’s judgement on a tobacco smuggling case involving three people. 

The district court has ordered three business people from Lhuentse to pay Nu 460,355 for illegal possession of tobacco items worth Nu 75,000.

A 49-year-old man from Tsaenkhar was ordered to pay Nu 41,250 in lieu of his eleven months prison term and a fine of Nu 374,980.

His wife, 65-year-old was asked to pay Nu 7500 for her two months imprisonment and a fine of Nu 16,000.

Another 43-year-old woman was also ordered to pay Nu 20,625 for her five and a half months prison term.

They were arrested by police in July last year.

They appealed to the High Court in September last year.
