Mother charged in baby’s death

A 24-year-old woman has been charged with voluntary manslaughter in the death of her newborn in April. She is suspected of having thrown the baby boy to its death out of a third-floor hotel window in Phuentshogling.

The OAG is currently reviewing the case and will forward it to the Phuentshogling Dungkhag Court soon.

Police forwarded the case to the OAG on July 10.

The woman had told the police she delivered the baby in the washroom of the hotel she stayed in that night. She claimed it was a stillbirth.

However, a post mortem examination carried out at the Phuentshogling General Hospital had revealed signs of life. The baby’s heart was found normal, which means it’s likely the neonate was born alive.

The woman is a support staff of a school in Haa. She was with the principal and a teacher of school at the time of the incident.

But both the men said they neither heard her giving birth nor saw her throwing the newborn.

However, they have been charged with aiding and abetting.

Doctors said it is not possible for the delivery to go unnoticed especially given it’s a case of a first-time mother giving birth to a baby weighing more than three kilograms.

Also, the three of them shared the same room that night.

The woman has also been charged with statutory rape as the father of the baby has been found to have been below 18 years of age when the two first started their relationship.
