Windstorm causes havoc in Wangdue and Punakha

A strong wind storm in Wangdue Phodrang and Punakha caused major damages this afternoon. Roofs of over 13 houses were badly damaged in the two Dzongkhags. There are no reports of casualties as of now.

Undercutting in tourism industry

Tourism sector is the largest contributor in Bhutan’s total revenue. There are hundreds of tour operators in the country, competing in the market. The cut-throat competition has led to undercutting in the minimum daily tariff set for tourists by some tour agents.

Farmers of east to export vegetables

Farmers from the six eastern Dzongkhags will export vegetables to the traders of Assam, India during summer beginning this year, when it is off-season in the neighbouring town. This was discussed during a meeting in Samdrup Jongkhar yesterday for cross-border vegetable export.

56 households of Dungmanma get their own forest

Pemathang community forest was handed over to the 56 households of Dungmanma village under Lumang Gewog in Trashigang yesterday. The community forest has more than 450 acres of forest. Until now, it was taken care by the Dzongkhag Forestry Division.

Another reality show comes on screen

The Druk Superstar Season II was launched today in the capital. Unlike the season I, the show this time will provide platform for both professional singers and new talents. The show is divided into three categories- singing, dancing and Lozay.

Stick to the rule or get demolished: Thimphu Thromde

The Thimphu Thromde has demolished an additional floor constructed on top of an attic in Changzamtog this morning. The house owner had converted it into an apartment, which is illegal. The demolition was carried out after the Thromde office issued several notifications to the house owner.

Global commitment at local level

Bhutan will join rest of the world in observing an event of the year -the earth hour tomorrow. The earth hour is a part of WWF worldwide campaign. It is observed every year from 8:30 pm onwards on the last Saturday of March for an hour.

UMSB to commence from June

(Update) Refurbishment of the University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan, UMSB, is in full swing. A Memorandum of Understanding with the Government  of India will be signed in the first week of April. The university will commence from June.  The MoU will be for human resource and capacity building as per the principal MoU that was signed earlier for 10 years.

Man mauled by bear in Bumthang

A 40-year-old man is undergoing treatment at the Wangdichholing General hospital in Bumthang after he was mauled by a black bear. The incident took place at around 7 pm yesterday when the victim and his relative were heading home after taking the cattle to the pastureland.

Bypass boon for residents of Tingtibi

It was not a good news for the Zhemgangpas when the Tingtibi-Wangdigang bypass road was open to traffic. However, on the other side it has come as a boon for the people of Tingtibi. Our reporter, Pema Samdrup, says within a few years the town has seen a lot of development.
