It was a bright sunny day in Thimphu today. And a group of 30 youth were on a mission. They were on a bike ride, taking the theme ‘Gross National Happiness begins at home’. It was the first family bike ride, which was held in the capital today.
The young enthusiasts rode for 10 kilometres, from from Thimphu to Namseling. Puspa Thapa was the only girl to participate in the event. She said it is fun and a healthy way of getting around the neighbourhood.
Many young participants said biking is a great way to keep themselves fit and enjoy fresh air. Some even said they are encouraged to use bicycle to get to school and back home.
The organizer, Yangchen Dolkar of the Wheel for Hills, said this type of event is an opportunity to raise awareness on environment and health issues. “But the capital city, is not a bicycle friendly city,” she said.
The response from family members received lukewarm response. Despite that, the organiser is optimistic that parents and family members will join the many family bike rides that will be organised in the coming months. The event will be organised once every month.
