With their contract expiring in November, 257 employees of the 720 MW Mangdechhu project will be competing in the job market. Most of them are worried while some are confident that with their experiences and expertise, they will have an upper hand in the market.

The official inauguration of the project took place last month. And most of the people left even before the inauguration. More than 100 contract employees are now already with the Druk Green Power Corporation. And now there are 257 contract employees who have to leave in a few months.

“We are worried whether other projects or companies would take us in. However after getting experience, if given an opportunity we would serve in any field,” said Sonam Gyeltshen, an employee of MHPA.

“All of us have a similar concern. What will we do after November,” added Damcho Tenzin, also in MHPA.

“Currently the project has given us extension till November. So I would like to work in some other projects in Bhutan if given opportunity,” shared L.K.Harwani, MHPA.

“Hereafter wherever we are given a chance we would be able to take up because we have the experience,” said Chorten Dema of MHPA.

The Punatshangchhu, Nikahchhu Hydropower Projects and Construction Development Corporation recruited a few. The management also said the employees would have to compete for jobs with gained experience and knowledge.

“Further the Kholongchhu project is going to pick up and there will be more requirements in this project. But we expect that our employees will compete in all kinds of opportunities and get the employment after they depart from here,” said Chencho Tshering, the Joint Managing Director of MHPA.

It has been a fruitful journey for them but all good things must come to an end.
