Wall mishap deceased’s family yet to be compensated(Update): Even after two months, the family the Thimphu Thromde employee, 73, who died after a wall collapsed on him in Changzamtog, Thimphu is yet to be compensated. They were supposed to receive a compensation of Nu 2,00,000.

Thimphu Thromde says the building owner, who had built the wall, should pay the compensation. The building owner says otherwise.

Last month, the Thimphu Thromde had written a letter asking the building owner to pay the compensation. Thromde’s letter also stated that the building owner had encroached on the government land and built a substandard wall.

The building owner wrote back to the thromde saying that even after a mass building safety survey following 2011 earthquake, the Thromde site inspectors did not inform her or her family members about the poor quality of the wall. She said if that was done, the mishap could have been avoided

Clarifying about the encroachment on the government land, the building owner said she had just cover the area with concrete and did not claim the land to be a private property by fencing it or building a gate.

In her letter, the building owner has also asked the thromde to question the national referral hospital for sending the ambulance to the site with just a driver. She wrote, during accidents, immediate medical help does make a difference.

Thimphu Thromde said if the building owner fails to compensate the deceased’s family, the case would end up in court. The building owner was supposed to pay compensation by June 3.
