The United Nations in Bhutan has committed almost USD 40 M to the government for this year. The UN will work on four key areas of social service, economy, environment, and governance, which aligns with the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan. According to the United Nations’ annual results report for Bhutan, which was released today, the UN’s development assistance amounted to a little over USD 35.57 M, last year.

According to a news release from the UN country office, the office will facilitate transition from least developed country status, advance the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and offer tailored assistance for effectively managing the LDC graduation process.

The news release further states that the UN will support the government to achieve shared developmental goals and priorities.

In 2023, the UN’s support centred on enhancing data management and governance for inclusive development with the establishment of the Bhutan Statistical Database System.

The platform facilitates evidence-based decision-making and enhances disaster preparedness and emergency coordination.

According to the news release, the UN supported initiatives aimed at ensuring equitable access to quality social services for the vulnerable population, addressing areas such as child protection, education, health, and nutrition.

“In a context marked by dynamic shifts and emerging challenges, our collaboration has been guided by a shared commitment to ‘leave no one behind’ and build a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future for all Bhutanese. Our support has been anchored in aligning our initiatives with the national priorities and development frameworks of Bhutan, including the 12th Five-Year Plan and the United Nations Sustainable Development Partnership Framework,” said Karla Robin Hershey, Resident Coordinator of United Nations in Bhutan.

According to the report, the UN’s Football for the Goals initiative in 2023 touched thousands of lives, which drove positive social change and significantly contributed in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Similarly, frontline and emergency workers were also trained on emergency preparedness and response, last year.

Bhutan became the 128th member to the United Nations in 1971.
