Two men sentenced to 25 years in prison for murder, Samdrup Jongkhar

Samdrup Jongkhar District Court sentenced two men to 25 years each in prison for the murder of a 36-year-old man in Gomdar Gewog last year.  The judgement was passed yesterday.

The convicts strangled the deceased to death after the main accused knew of his wife having an affair with the deceased.  The incident occurred on May 19 last year at the house of the convict.

As per the Penal Code of Bhutan, the sentence term for murder is minimum of 15 years to a maximum of a life sentence, however, the main accused is not sentenced to life imprisonment since the crime was committed under mitigating of circumstances where he was under the affliction of extreme mental and emotional distress.

Meanwhile, the accomplice was also sentenced to 25 years in prison because he helped the main accused in carrying out the crime as an active partner.

According to the judgement, the convicts have to pay a compensation of Nu 492,875 to the widow of the deceased and the wife of the convict who was having an affair with the deceased was also directed to pay a compensation of Nu 27,250 to the widow.
