Tsirang is planning to declare the district as a bamboo capital and works to achieve it have already begun. Earlier this month, coinciding with the social forestry day on June 2, the dzongkhag planted five species of bamboos in about five acres of land in Tsholingkhar Gewog.

Bamboos are must have raw materials in construction sites. The available bamboos in the locality are not very feasible to use in the construction sites for its softness. Thus, bamboos of strong quality are imported from the neighbouring countries.

In an effort to curb bamboo imports from the border areas, Tsirang is focusing on a large-scale bamboo plantation. It is also expected to in environmental conservations, climate-smart solution, poverty uplift. Also, it would help curb dependency on the products which otherwise can be available within the country.

“With today’s bamboo plantation in Gomsum Chiwog, it will not only benefit the people here but also the nation at large,” Tsirang Dzongda Pema said.

All 12 gewogs were also distributed with 50 number of bamboo saplings to kick start the mass bamboo plantation works.

Bamboos are one of the fastest growing plants in the world, their growth is three times faster then most other species of plants. Bamboos can be harvested in five to seven years time after its plantation. The proposal for mass bamboo plantation was discussed in the Dzongkha Tshogdu last year.
