The Ministry of Education brought Shakespeare live on stage to mark the re-introduction of the Bard in the English curriculum. Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck graced the play at the Royal Convention Centre, yesterday.
Students of various schools in Thimphu underwent an intensive training to bring Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” alive on stage. They were selected based on an audition.
The Prime Minister’s recited a monologue of Shakespeare’s character, Shylock adding colours to the programme.
From 2017, ‘The Merchant of Venice’ will replace dramas the class 11 and 12 students study.
The play has been identified to start with as it is relatively simpler than other plays of Shakespeare.
A total of approximately 174 teachers teaching in classes 11 and 12 will attend the orientation workshop for 10 days during the winter break to equip them in handling the plays competently.
