Taklai embankment wall should be reconstructed, villagers say-People of Umling Gewog in Sarpang want the river embankment wall along the Taklai River reconstructed before the paddy transplantation season, next year.

More than 60 percent of the 800-metre wall was washed away last month following continuous rainfall.

Umling Gup, Ugyen Norbu, during the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu, said after the protection wall was washed away, the river diverted its course and damaged paddy fields belonging to some 30 households of Gaden and Lingar villages.

“If the reconstruction of the embankment wall is not carried out this winter then paddy cultivation will not be possible, next year. There are chances the river might start flowing into the fields.”

The Dzongkhag Tshogdu Chairperson informed that experts from the works and human settlement ministry are visiting the areas affected by the recent rainfall and will accordingly come up with mitigation solutions.
