Locals of Khatoedkha and Khamaedna chiwog in Gase Tshogongm Gewog, Wangdue Phodrang are carrying the Kanjur, a religious scripture books, on their back and walking under the scorching Sun to seek divine intervention for rain in their community.
About sixty locals are taking part in the event today. Besides carrying religious scriptures, they also shout and play religious instruments, and circumambulate their villages touching every corner.
Simultaneously, a group of people led by a Lama performs ritual, “Mang Rimdro” at Khatokha Goenpa in the chiwog. A daylong event will conclude in the evening after reaching back the Kanjur to the Goenpa.
This is considered to be one of the religious practices to seek help from the local deities for rain during such extreme situations in the community.
Farmers perform such rituals whenever they fail to get rainfall in their community on time and, today, they are in desperate need of water for their paddy cultivation. Some people say their paddy cultivation is getting late due to lack of water this year.
