Voters of Samdrup Jongkhar thromde chose their new Thrompon with experiences over other dynamics. Having worked as a Thromde Tshogpa for about three years, Thinley Namgay wins the election by an overwhelming margin.
Of over 600 votes cast, Thinley Namgay secured over 400 votes. This translates to about 70 percent of the total votes. His work experiences in the thromde administration, alongside his pledge to bring services to people, were the winning factors.
One of the thromde residents Bhim Bahdur Karki said although both the candidates were equally capable, people voted for the experienced one.
“I think people chose Thinley Namgay because he has already worked as the Thromde Tshogpa,” he said.
Likewise, another resident, Norkey, said his experience as a former Tshogpa helped him stand out from his opponent.
The Thrompon-elect was also confident about winning the election.
He said people allowed him to serve as the Tshogpa before and that they know him well.
“I believe they voted for me because they are happy about my pledges and promises. I will also work hard to fulfil them all and keep up to their expectations,” the Thrompon-elect said.
With his manifesto ‘Services closer to People’, he promises the thromde residents to attend to their needs at the earliest time possible.
And now they have selected the best candidate, residents in the thromde want the new thrompon to solve the long-standing water woes at the earliest.
Meanwhile, his opponent, Ugyen Wangchuk told BBS that this election gave him the most needed courage to come back as a stronger candidate in the next election.
Along with thrompon, five-thromde tshogpas were also elected yesterday. However, the Bar constituency could not hold the tshogpa election due to a lack of candidates.
The Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde election could not be conducted along with three other thromdes in 2011 due to a lack of candidates from some constituencies.
