Residents who have settled in Trashigang town will be encouraged to move their census to the Throm from their respective gewogs. This was decided by the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu.
The move is part of efforts aimed at developing Trashigang Thromde. But concerns are being raised that this might fuel the already growing rural urban migration.
There are over 2,000 people residing under Trashigang Thromde today. But only around 200 of them actually have their census under the Thromde. The rest are civil servants and people running business in the town.
Many people from Kanglung, Bartsham and Shongphu Gewogs have now settled in Trashigang town, but have their census with their respective Gewogs.

The recent Dzongkhag Tshogdu therefore debated whether their census should be brought under the town or not.
For developmental activities and extension of the town, the local leaders are of the view that the town should have more people. So, to increase the town’s population, the local leaders said those people who have settled in the town should bring their census under the town area.
However, some local leaders said the decision to transfer census might encourage rural-urban migration, which is already a serious issue in the Dzongkhag.
Although not made mandatory, the Dzongkhag Tshogdue decided to, encourage people, who have houses in the town, to move their census from the Gewogs to the Thromde.
