For more than two decades, the people of Khothakpa-Tsebar in Pema Gatshel have dreamt of having a smooth and blacktopped road. At long last, their prayers will be answered. The 28-kilometre stretch, one of the oldest roads in the district is finally set to be blacktopped. The road will soon be handed over to Project DANTAK, and the people are eagerly anticipating the project to expedite the blacktopping works.
Except for heavy vehicles, the road has become almost unusable for light vehicles. According to the people, the condition has deteriorated with heavy vehicles ferrying gypsum making use of the road.
The bad road condition poses problems to motorists, especially during the summer.
“The struggle due to bad road conditions occurs even in winter but the road condition is particularly worse during summer. Driving through the muddy road becomes incredibly difficult, leading to excessive wear and tear on the vehicle tires. As a result, it’s challenging for us to make income,” said Pema Laydra, a trucker.
“Villagers ask us to hire out our vehicles to them. However, the presence of potholes on the road prevents vehicles from travelling safely, leading to frequent breakdowns and inconveniences,” said Norbu Jamtsho, another trucker.
“As the road is not blacktopped, the road is riddled with potholes. It would greatly benefit us if the road is blacktopped,” said Dorji, a trucker.
The dire condition of the road has also affected the residents living near the unpaved road.
“With school-going children using the road, there is a risk of stones hitting the children when vehicles pass by. Additionally, the dust from the unpaved road affects the nearby residents,” said Damchoe Dorji.
“As the road condition is poor, it is challenging to hire vehicles for bringing goods to the shop,” said Tshering Lhamo.
“We have to eat our meals in dusty conditions most of the time. During winter, the dust becomes even more prominent, almost like a cloud, causing our CGI sheet to rust,” said Tashi Dawa.
However, according to the Department of Surface Transport in Pema Gatshel, once the road verification is complete, the road will soon be handed over to Project DANTAK. The department plans to request the project to prioritise the blacktopping of this stretch.
The blacktopping works will benefit more than 100 households.
