Six dogs and a jersey cow has tested positive for rabies in Phuentshogling and Samphelling gewog in Chhukha.

Veterinary officials said that the porous border, and the trans movement of stray dogs, is the main cause of the outbreak.

The first case was reported in March 21. So far, no case of transmission to people has been reported.

Over a thousand stray dogs are being vaccinated in the Gewogs.

Since many cases go unreported, the officials have activated the rapid response team and are sensitising the community on rabies outbreak.

Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal.
