A thousand butter lamps were lit for the late Bangladeshi President, Mohammad Zillur Rahman, in Thimphu, today.
A prayer ceremony was performed at the Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Jigmi Y Thinley, the Cabinet Ministers, and other senior officials.
Mr. Rahman, 84, passed away at a hospital in Singapore, yesterday. He had been under treatment for critical lung infection since March 10.
Mr. Rahman was a close associate of Bangladesh’s founder, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He is regarded as a key figure in the consolidation of the ruling Awami League’s unity at different times after the 1975 coup when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was killed along with most of his family members.
