A policeman is being held in the quarter guard, a confinement cell for military personnel, in Samdrup Jongkhar police station for allegedly stabbing a 22-year-old man.

The incident happened on the night of April 27, near the Food Corporation of Bhutan’s office in Samdrup Jongkhar town.

The victim, according to his uncle, was stabbed while returning home with a friend at around 8 PM after they had gone to drop off another friend. The two of them were stopped and frisked by the suspect. After they were frisked, they had asked if they could leave, and the policeman allegedly attacked the victim, after questioning them why they were out late.

BBS learnt that the accused policeman was in the area, accompanying a colleague, who was looking into a battery complaint. The accused was waiting outside when he saw the victim and his friend.

Sources said the accused stopped the two of them, thinking they may be involved in the battery case and showed a knife to frighten them. Sources said, the accused hit the victim accidentally, when the victim and his friend tried to snatch the knife from him.

The accused was carrying a knife as he had joined duty right after gardening.

The victim sustained a five-centimetre long cut on his head. He is in stable condition. He has formally compromised and withdrawn the case today.

Meanwhile, the Royal Bhutan Police said they would initiate a court of inquiry, which is a tribunal appointed to investigate matters concerning police forces and decide whether a court martial is warranted.
