The Prime Minister Jigmi Y.Thinley is back in the capital after a three-day-visit to the remote gewog of Laya under Gasa Dzongkhag.

While in Laya, Lyonchhoen met and interacted with the members of Dzongkhag Tshogdey and Gewog Tshogdey, civil servants and the public of Khamoed and Laya Gewogs.

At a public meeting on November 1, Lyonchhoen said the visit was to thank the people of Laya in person for continuing to carry out their responsibilities as nomads and yak herders in harsh terrains under difficult weather conditions, and thus continuing their role in protecting the boundary.

Several issues including the 10th Plan activities were discussed with the public. The achievements and the challenges were also discussed.

The Rural Water Supply Scheme coverage in Laya has reached 97 percent, mobile connectivity at 100 percent and rural electrification (off grid) is 100 percent. The student enrollment is at 97.3 percent.

Lyonchhoen assured the parents that the government will consider the people’s request to upgrade the school until class VIII in order to allow students to study in Laya

Housing shortage for civil servants in Gasa Dzongkhag was also raised at the meeting along with the delay facing the GC Road to Laya.

Planning officials informed the public that the survey, design and environmental clearance for the construction of the road are complete.

Lyonchhoen also spoke on the importance of preserving the cultural identity of Laya and the importance of tourism in the area among others.
