Girls’ football team of Sakteng Lower Secondary School (SLSS) in Trashigang lost a match to team Thimphu City girls at Changlimithang stadium, yesterday.

Despite losing, the team members are not crestfallen because for them participation mattered more than winning.

“This is my first visit to the capital city and I got an opportunity to visit the memorial chorten and Buddha point and played on the artificial turf,” said one of the players, Thubten Tshomo.

Another player, Pema Tshomo said it was a completely different experience for her. “I learned to play soccer wearing boots. In Sakteng, I play barefoot.”

Teachers, who escorted the team, said they have gained knowledge in several other fields which would help them in personality grooming.

In the meantime, RENEW also spoke to the girls on gender equality and fundamental rights.

The team left for Sakteng today.

UNICEF Bhutan and the local football club, Thimphu City FC brought the team to empower them through the sporting activities.
