Dorokha Middle Secondary School in Samtse is faced with shortage of history teacher. The school is worried that it might affect the performance of students especially those appearing the board exam. The school has 963 students and 29 teachers. The school does not have a history teacher for higher classes. Currently, Physics and Dzongkha teachers take turns to teach history.
“Class X being most important period of their life as they have to go for higher studis next year, I think it is going to hamper their studies particularly in History. I am concern how this people can do in history this year,” says Tshewang Tenzin, one of the teachers.
Some of the students said it would be difficult for them to score good marks in history due to lack of teacher. The students said they also do not get much information when taught by a substitute teacher.
“Substitute teachers teaching history and English teach what is given in the book. We are not getting the information what is outside the book,” says Madhan Kumar Rai, a student.
“In absence of teachers,” says Gom Bahadhur Rai, “we cannot study properly during study hours. Sometimes teacher don’t come to the class due to shortage of teachers.”
According to the Vice-principal, the shortage occurred after the previous History teacher was transferred to Extended Classroom at Daragoan village under Dorokha Dungkhag.
The Dzongkhag Education Officer of Samtse, however, said the school has enough teachers and it is not a problem. He said the school currently has two history teachers.
Dorokha Middle Secondary School was established in 1955.
