Coinciding with the World No Tobacco Day, Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag uprooted about 93 acres of marijuana plants yesterday.

The initiative was carried out for the first time in the dzongkhag by the dzongkhag administration with financial support from Bhutan Narcotic Control Authority (BNCA).

More than one thousand people including DeSuup, armed force personnel, local community, dzongkhag administration, teachers, students and BNCA officials took part in the event.

It was primarily initiated to create awareness about the ill effect of the marijuana plant and to reduce its growth in the dzongkhag.  The initiative is also taken to prevent drugs abuse and maintain Wangduephodrang Dzongkhag as a drugs free dzongkhag.

According to the Dzongkhag official, similar initiatives will be carried out annually hereafter.
