Dzongkhags wishing to host seminars can put up proposals: PM

Around this time of the year, southern districts in the country enjoy favourable weather condition. For this reason, government offices, corporate agencies, and other prominent organisations organise workshops, seminars, and other official gatherings in Phuentshogling, Gelegphu, and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Realising that such meetings have positive impact on the local economy, local leaders of remote dzongkhags such as Zhemgang have voiced their opinions, suggesting if the dzongkhag could also host similar workshops and seminars. During Meet The Press session on Wednesday, Zhemgang’s BBS correspondent, Pema Samdrup, sought government’s opinion on the matter.

Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, gave positive response, saying dzongkhags must come forward and put up proposals to the concerned agencies. “In winter, Bumthang and Thimphu become too cold to host meetings. But rest of the dzongkhags can come forward and submit your proposals,” said Prime Minister. “If you want tourism meeting, ask the Tourism Council. If it is education conference, ask the Education Minister.”

Lyonchhen added if all the amenities and hospitality facilities are in place, official meetings will boost the local economy.
