Thegchhog Namdrol Ugyen Choling Shedra to be upgraded-.Upon the command of His Majesty the King, Thegchhog Namdrol Ugyen Choling Shedra in Dramedtse under Monggar Dzongkhag will be upgraded to a new Buddhist college.

His Royal Highness, Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck graced the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of new structures yesterday. His Royal Highness was accompanied by Ashi Yeatso Lhamo.

New structures like classrooms, dormitory, administrative block, kitchen and conference hall will be constructed under the project. The project is dedicated to the 60th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Up-gradation works will be carried out at a cost of over Nu 70 M.

Sungtrul Rinpoche, Jigdral Kunzang Pema Dorje, said once complete, they hope to accommodate 200 students.

Apart from regular teachings in the Shedra, the students will also be taught the Peling tradition of Buddhism. They will learn English as a part of their studies.

Dramedtse Gup, Tshering Dorji said with the new college, it will be convenient for the monks to pursue higher studies, especially for those who are from economically poor background.

The Monastery in Drametse was founded by Terton Pema Lingpa’s daughter, Ani Choeten Zangmo in 1511 A.D. Currently, the shedra offers religious studies up to class VIII. There are 140 monks and gomchens studying in the monastery.
