PDP and BTP go through to General Round of the fourth NA Elections

The People’s Democratic Party and the Bhutan Tendrel Party will take on each other in the General Round of the fourth National Assembly Elections 2023-2024. The two parties secured the highest votes on the poll day of the primary round held yesterday. The Election Commission of Bhutan announced the official results today.

The People’s Democratic Party secured the highest votes with 42.53 per cent of the voters favoring them. 133,217 people voted for the PDP. The party secured the highest in both EVMs and postal ballots. It got 83,052 EVM votes and 50,165 postal ballots.

The Bhutan Tendrel Party secured over 19 per cent of the total votes. The BTP got 61,331 votes. It also secured the second-highest votes in EVM and postal ballots with 38,725 and 22,606 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Druk Phuensum Tshogpa secured a total of 46,694 votes, Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa got 41,106 votes and the Druk Thuendrel Tshogpa received 30,814 votes.

Besides securing the highest votes, the PDP also won in most of the constituencies. It won 39 of the 47 constituencies, while the BTP won 4 constituencies and DNT and DPT won two constituencies each.

A total of 313,162 Bhutanese took part in the primary round of the NA elections. 195,719 people have voted through the EVM and 117,443 people voted through postal ballots.

There are a total of 497,058 eligible voters.

According to the ECB’s news release, the two winning parties have to formally nominate its candidates for the General Round before the nomination period ends on 9th December.
