Bhutan Women’s National Championship 2020 to be played in Punakha

The Bhutan Women’s National Championship 2020 will begin next week with 10 teams from eight districts taking part in the competition this time. Unlike the previous years, the tournament this time will be a centralised event to be played in Punakha because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organised by the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF), the Women’s National Championship is the main football competition for women held every year.

The Bhutan Women’s National Championship 2020 this time will be held in Punakha with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols in place.

“We have very strict SOPs for girls this time as they are travelling from different districts and they need to produce COVID-19 test certificates so that they are safe and other players are safe too. The hotel facilities will be more like quarantine centres whereby their movement will be monitored. It will be about a two-week-long tournament and finish it very fast as it is one of the mandatory programs to be held by FIFA,” said Phuntsho Wangdi, the Head of Commercial and Communication with the BFF.

The opening match of the tournament will be played on 16th December with Ugyen Academy FC going head to head against Sunrise Women’s FC.

The tournament which saw 10 teams from 10 different districts taking part in the competition last year has decreased in the team representation from various districts. Teams from Samtse, Tsirang, Sarpang, and Trashigang have failed to feature this time.

However, Wangdue Phodrang Women’s Football Club and Pema Gatshel Women’s Football Club will make their debut in the competition this year.
