The Tshogpas of Chaling and Shongphu under Shongphu Gewog and Tongling under Radhi Gewog submitted a petition to Trashigang District Court, on overturning Dzongkhag Tshogdu’s decision by the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement on Merag Gewog centre road blacktopping issue.

The issue came up last year when the Dzongkhag Tshogdu endorsed the plan of blacktopping the Merag GC road from Chaling. This didn’t go well with the people of Merag who wanted the GC road which is routed through Khardung in Radhi Gewog stating that the road is stable and most people use that road.

People of Merag also shared that the GC road through Khardung would better serve them since most of their children are studying in Dungtse School and children from remote Khiliphoo chiwog are enrolled in Togshingmang boarding school. The road via Khardung runs through these schools.

However, the people of Merag were told that they cannot overtake Dzongkhag Tshogdu’s decision, and have to wait for another session to endorse or change if needed.

Although the MoWHS overturning the Dzongkhag Tshogdu’s decision answered the prayers of the people of Merag, the Tshogpas of the three affected chiwogs want answers.
