Farmers of Sergithang Gewog in Tsirang are now opting to grow spring chilli that hits the market early on a larger scale. The farmers who otherwise grow vegetables have, this year, cultivated the spice on some 140 acres of land. This, according to the farmers, is to offset the decline in income from vegetable sales.

In an effort to curb the government expenses on managing free-roaming dogs, Paro District Administration has handed over a dog shelter located at Jizhignag of Dopshari Gewog to Zeus for Stray and Homeless Dogs. To ensure the healthy growth of a child, the National Referral Hospital and hospitals in some districts and Thromdes have been screening newborns right after birth. The newborns are being screened for apparent defects during birth including heart, vision and hearing among others. According to health officials, although many parents are now aware of the importance of such screenings, some do not come for follow-up. As a result, doctors say, they are unable to thoroughly detect and correct the defects on time in some children.  

Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Interim Advisor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, and Ambassador of India to Bhutan, Sudhakar Dalela signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for an INR 15bn loan. This funding is dedicated to the Gyalsung Infrastructure Project.

Despite being certified as a leprosy-eliminated country, Bhutan is still reporting a few cases of leprosy. According to data from the health ministry, while the numbers reported at the national level is as not alarming, some districts have been recording concerning numbers of leprosy cases in the past few years. Health officials attribute this to public misunderstanding common symptoms of leprosy to some other mild diseases and failing to seek treatment on time.

In Wangdue Phodrang, Olep’s of Rukha Chiwog at Athang Gewog are able to increase their agricultural production. This is after the farmers received sufficient irrigation water through the Green Climate Fund in the 12th Five Year Plan. Farmers there had been struggling with an acute shortage of water for agricultural purposes for decades. The new irrigation water supply has encouraged the farmers to expand their agricultural works and improve production to meet self-sufficiency.

Egg shortage during winter has been a recurring issue in the country. This winter, residents of Pema Gatshel are facing the shortage. Although there are many poultry farms in the district, the shortage persists every winter. To address the problem, some of the poultry farm owners are considering the construction of a proper concrete chicken coop equipped with proper heating on a trial basis.
